CD REVIEW: Ed Harcourt

Ed Harcourt
From Every Sphere
EMI / Capitol

Despite the fact From Every Sphere is Harcourt's sophomore effort, the 23-year-old already sounds like a music veteran.

Harcourt riles the listener with honky-tonk piano balladry ("Bittersweetheart"), then settles them down with soothing lullabies ("Metaphorically Yours"). His third track, "Ghost Writer," is reminiscent of Tom Waits and elements of blues, cabaret, twang and power-pop surface throughout the record.

Surprisingly, Harcourt's wit and charm do not detract from his sincerity, ultimately making From Every Sphere an album to please critics and the public alike.
