Fire strikes Huron Food Court

-Paolo (Jimmy Olsen) Zinatelli / Gazette

Yesterday afternoon a fire broke out behind the Huron University College Food Court.

Just after 4 p.m. the London Fire Department was called after flames were noticed in a dumpster next to the back wall of the food court. The dumpster was filled mainly with cardboard.

According to witnesses at the scene, flames eventually reached the roof of the building.

Platoon Chief David Van Dijk said the fire department received a call at 4:07 p.m., however they were not originally informed the dumpster was located directly next to the building and only one truck was dispatched.

Three trucks were eventually sent to extinguish the flames. The two walls directly next to the dumpster were damaged by the smoke and flames. The cost of the damages was not immediately known.

Van Dijk could not confirm whether the fire was set deliberately or if it was an accident.

No injuries were reported and the fire was extinguished within the hour.
