Purple Pipe: Mitch Vermue

Aaron Lynett/Gazette
DON’T HATE ME BECAUSE I’M BEAUTIFUL. Purple Pipe winner Mitch Vermue gives his best sultry pose with the help of the ubiquitous plumbing implement.

Mitch Vermue certainly has made the most of his rookie season at Western, and that is why he is awarded the Purple Pipe this week.

The high jumper has been a bright spot on Western’s track and field team this year, with impressive results at the Ontario University Athletics’ track meet at York University earlier this month and the Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s championships at the University of Windsor this past weekend.

Vermue set his personal best record at the OUA meet, leaping a stellar 2.08 metres. Some questioned whether as a rookie he could duplicate such an incredible performance. At the CIS meet, he proved that the OUA results were no fluke, jumping 2.05m. All his jumps up to 2.05, we’re cleared almost effortlessly on the first attempt. He bowed out after a valiant effort on his third attempt at 2.08m to place second in the event.

With such great performances in his first year on the team, Vermue is clearly a huge asset for Western track. He’ll be a key cog in the team for the coming seasons.
