In Brief: Eminem, Jesus, Cruz & Cruise
Jesus movie sparks confession
Although critics have argued that Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ
is excessively violent and anti-Semitic, they can’t deny its power on
audiences — a repentant Texan turned himself in to police after seeing
the movie and confessed to the murder of a woman pregnant with his child.
Dan Leach, 21, said he killed Ashley Nicole Wilson, 19, because he wanted
her out of his life. Wilson was found dead in her apartment on Jan. 18 with
a suicide note describing her depression. Police had previously thought she
had hung herself, but Leach admitted to staging the murder to look like a suicide.
Leach was indicted by a grand jury and has been arrested.
Here’s what a connection to Eminem will
Kimberly Mathers — ex-wife of Marshall Bruce Mathers III, better known
as Eminem — is back in jail for dropping out of a court-ordered drug
Mathers was sentenced to a two-year probation on Jan. 21 for cocaine possession
and failure to give adequate space to an emergency vehicle. She is also prohibited
from using alcohol and non prescription drugs. On Feb. 12, she was ordered
to spend 30 days in jail for cocaine use while on probation, followed by 90
days in an in-patient substance abuse treatment program. Mathers was released
on Mar. 1 to attend the program.
Last Tuesday, she was ordered back to jail for leaving the program, where
she must complete the rest of her sentence. Mathers’ sentence is complete
on May 12.
Cruise & Cruz still buddies
Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz split in January, halting any possibility of children
surnamed Cruise-Cruz. But according to their publicists, the two remain good
The breakup explains why Cruise was flying solo at the Oscars, and why he
spent most of his time there with ex-wife Nicole Kidman, who had just broken
up with rocker Lenny Kravitz.
But Cruise-Kidman supporters shouldn’t start celebrating yet — less
than a month ago, Cruise rushed to Morocco when Cruz collapsed from exhaustion
on the set of her new movie.
