Saturday night, Western students combined their spirit of giving with gowns, tuxedos and a steady flow of alcohol at Charity Ball, which raised over $20,000 for London Special Olympics.

Western’s annual premiere social event was held at the London Convention Centre. Approximately 2,000 students shunned The Ceeps lineup to dress up and contribute to a local charity.

The paradise-themed evening featured a DJ, a live performance by the Elemeno Peas, an acrobatic spectacle and a special performance by Western Idol co-winner Rachael De Souza.

A silent auction was also held throughout the evening to raise additional funds for the charity. Donations from local restaurants and businesses chipped in over $2,000.

While tickets for the event were significantly cheaper than in past years, Charity Ball’s lowered prices created an increase in attendance and subsequently raised more money.

“The event ran flawlessly,” said Charity Ball Commissioner Peter Markvoort. “I couldn’t be happier with the turnout and the committee should be so proud of themselves. We managed to lower the price to make the event accessible to all students while maintaining the same level of charitable contribution.”
