Ongiara by Great Lake Swimmers

3.5 stars

Ongiara was the harbour boat the folk band Great Lake Swimmers took to Toronto Island to record its third album. The Toronto-based band pays tribute to the nation’s diverse landscape throughout the album.

“Your Rocky Spine” exemplifies Great Lake Swimmers’ love affair with Canada. The country-infused first single celebrates the nation’s rich geography, as do the quieter “Put There By The Land” and “Changing Colours.”

Ongiara is Great Lake Swimmers’ first release on Nettwerk Records. Along with its shift in labels, the band shifted its sound slightly with help from numerous Canadian musicians, including Sarah Harmer and Owen Pallett.

Despite the band’s musical progression, Ongiara doesn’t stray too far from its previous releases’ sound. Lead singer Tony Dekker continues crafting the haunting, folk/alt-country songs he’s known for.

Great Lake Swimmers continue doing what they do best: creating beautiful, soft acoustic music appealing to both new and old listeners.
