American Idol winner Carrie Underwood has won the adoration of the American public again with her latest release, Carnival Ride. The disc debuted at number one on U.S. pop charts after its release on Oct. 23, selling a remarkable 527,000 units.

The album’s first single, “So Small,” co-written by the Grammy winner herself, is an inspiring tune that imparts an everlasting message to its listeners.

On her knees in the rock and roll-edged “Flat on the Floor,” Underwood painfully declares she can’t be pushed down any farther.

In “All American Girl,” she covers the always-melodramatic high school love. Only a powerful ending note that comes too late saves this cliché track.

A cover of the 1988 Randy Travis classic, “Told You So,” is catchy. In it, Underwood demonstrates the vocal range for which she is famous.

In the smooth ballad “I Know You Won’t” she sings about a relationship plagued by disenchantment. Like the track “Wheel of the World,” “I Know You Won’t” is about how life happens, but how it continues to travel onwards, offering new possibilities every day.

It’s no surprise this American Idol winner, with Grammys in hand, has surmounted the sophomore slump with Carnival Ride. Underwood takes her listeners on an unforgettable journey.
