Shivaree’s fourth album, Tainted love: Mating Calls and Fight Songs, is a little more love and a lot less fight.

A bit of a departure from Shivaree’s usual work, the album is essentially a compilation of covers. With songs penned by Mötley Crüe, R. Kelly, and Gary Glitter, Shivaree has infused classic pop songs with a cabaret-style that delves into the indie rock genre.

A synthesizer creates a cool, mellow sound throughout most of the album. Vocalist Ambrosia Parsley sounds something like a cross between Gwen Stefani and Feist on sedatives.

“My Heart Belongs to You” is a quaint romp that evokes black and white films and old-fashioned romance. “Hello! Hello! I’m Back Again” is one of the album’s highlights with Shivaree breathing a calm, low-key vibe into the Gary Glitter classic.

All in all, Tainted Love: Mating Calls and Fight Songs is not a collection essential, but still a strong album.
