Turner stages a Grammy comeback; Gibson gets sued

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

• The 50th Annual Grammy Awards kept it interesting and delivered to viewers. Tina Turner forgot her age and attempted a kick in a silver body suit, Amy Winehouse sang sober via satellite and Kanye West didn’t have to throw a fit when he finally won that Grammy.

The musical acts were memorable; Alicia Keys performed a duet with the late Frank Sinatra, the orchestra changed the pace with a performance of Rhapsody in Blue, Aretha Franklin rolled around on the stage and Josh Groban was honored for a collaboration with Andrea Bocelli.

Some Grammy lows were Beyoncé dressed up as an iceberg "" her mom picked it out, no doubt "" Yoko Ono as a Jiminy Cricket imposter and Nelly Furtado’s disastrous dye job.

Sir Paul McCartney missed out on the Grammys for a far less glamorous event. He faced off with estranged wife Heather Mills in a London court to discuss divorce settlements. Mills is requesting £50 to 100 million, property and McCartney’s future earnings for her participation in their four-year marriage, as well as custody of their daughter Beatrice. Either the allegations of McCartney’s abusive behaviour are true or Mills is planning to do some serious shopping.

Mel Gibson is under fire again. Screenwriter Benedict Fitzgerald is suing the actor/director for breach of contract and unfair business practices, among other things. Fitzgerald claims he did not receive enough recognition or money for his contribution to The Passion of the Christ. The suit states “Gibson callously and greedily exploited [Fitzgerald].” Gibson’s attorney insists “[Fitzgerald] was handsomely compensated.”

Ryan Phillippe recently opened up to W magazine about his 2006 divorce from Reese Witherspoon. The couple’s split was rumoured to be a result of an affair between Phillippe and his Stop Loss co-star Abbie Cornish. Phillippe refused to confirm or deny having an affair, but stated, “I don’t think an outside person can ever cause a divorce. I had difficulties in my relationship and in my marriage, long before I ever met [Cornish].” It’s okay Ryan, you don’t have to say it "" it’s common knowledge that “difficulties” probably means being overshadowed by Reese’s Oscar.

• For a girl who dissed someone for being “Complicated,” Avril Lavigne has become highly commercialized. She has announced she will be launching a clothing line and a fragrance. Because obviously when a consumer wants to smell good, they think of Lavigne.

Lindsay Lohan is probably flashing her panties at a club somewhere, but her 14-year-old sister Ali Lohan has more sober ambitions. Ali’s rep has announced that she will be auditioning for a role in High School Musical 3. Here’s hoping this gig does better than her album, Lohan Holiday.
