Allahar in contention for Top Lecturer in Ontario

Western sociology professor flattered by nomination

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Western sociology professor Anton Allahar is a top contender in TVO’s Big Ideas program. The show is down to the top 10 nominees, who are competing for the title of Ontario’s Best Lecturer.

Allahar acknowledged the Western community houses many talented teachers and individuals who also deserve recognition.

“I know that there are outstanding teachers at this university and I think it was perhaps the luck of the draw that my name ended up as the last one at Western,” Allahar said.

“You have people who are really passionate about what they do, who are gifted, who are devoted, who are dedicated.”

If Allahar ends up winning the competition, he will be rewarded with more than the title of Ontario’s Best Lecturer.

“If I were to win I would get $10,000 that I must give to the university,” Allahar explained.

Allahar went on to say the competition has not been an entirely positive experience for him.

“There are pros and cons [to being in the top 10]. It is great how you feel and for those people who support you,” Allahar said, “But it is terrible… because some colleagues can become jealous.”

“I think at the end of the day it was flattering to have been nominated and to have made it this far,” Allahar concluded.

Allahar’s competition lecture, entitled “Why Is The Whole World Not Developed?” can be viewed online at www.tvo.org. To vote Allahar as Ontario’s Top Lecturer, either visit the website or call 1-866-281-3536. Voting closes on April 5 at 6 p.m.
