After years of involvement within various levels of the University Students’ Council, Tom Stevenson now seeks its highest position.

“The past four years have been the best years of my life, and I want the opportunity to give back to the school that’s given so much to me.”

Stevenson said he first considered running for USC president when he was Science Students’ Council president last year, but didn’t begin organizing a campaign team until this September.

From performing in Theatre Western’s Cabaret three years ago to being part of this year’s Orientation Staff, Stevenson has been involved in a broad range of activities at Western.

Over the next few weeks, Stevenson hopes to convey his presidential qualifications to Western students in a non-confrontational manner.

“Campaigning is about being a genuine person; it’s not about being pushy,” he said. “It’s about substance and actually caring [about students].”

As a science councillor this year, Stevenson said he disagreed with Council’s recent decision not to hold a referendum about a potential student levy for Western’s Student Refugee Program.

While he understands the rationale of the motion’s opponents, Stevenson said the wording could’ve been changed to include an opt-out or a plebiscite could’ve been held.
