Staring the stars HIGH above!

With the vast majority of Western’s first-year students under the legal drinking age, this year’s frosh will find new and creative ways to abandon sobriety.

Translation: expect plenty of Western’s new crop of students to experiment with the wacky tobacky.

This trend is not limited to Western, or even university students in Canada. According to a UN study published in The Globe and Mail, all Canadians are lighting up at unprecedented rates.

In fact, Canada leads the industrialized world in marijuana smoking. Almost 17 per cent of Canadians aged 15 to 64 use marijuana, and the only nations that spark up more than Canada are Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, Ghana and Zambia.

With that in mind, the following are a few tips and pieces of sage advice for those first-years wishing to enjoy some green vegetables " and we’re not talking your cafeteria’s salad bar.

How to Roll a Doobie

General Tips:
- DON’T EVEN CONSIDER smoking in residence. The residences are home to all types of students with all types of lifestyles. It’s important to have respect for others and obey the building’s rules. Also, there is a strict zero-tolerance policy for pot smoking in residence, so unless you like sleeping under the stars, it would be foolish to take such a risk.

- Spark up with friends. While many people can enjoy pot individually, smoking is a great way to socialize with people you’ll meet in first year and will help to foster some friendships.

- Don’t let pot get in the way of school work. As the old adage goes: “It’s OK in moderation.” Don’t let marijuana sacrifice your academic and extra-curricular ambitions. You should be here to learn and to develop social skills, not to set a record for how many times you watch episodes of South Park.

- Smoke at night. Not only is a session a great way to decompress after your classes, but the areas you may choose to smoke on campus will be much quieter and less-traveled in the dark.

Fun Things To Do While Stoned:
- Play/listen to music. If you play an instrument, sipping some weed is a great way to get in the groove and hone your focus. If you don’t play an instrument, entertain yourself by throwing some tunes on your playlist. People might confuse you for an excavation crew, because that’s how much you’ll be digging it.

- Watch a movie. While a serious drama might go over like a lead zeppelin, putting on a reliable comedy when high is always a sound decision. Who doesn’t love a good laugh?

- Play a board game with your floormates. Seriously, can you think of a better way to make Monopoly, Pictionary or Cranium fun?

- Fool around. Doing stuff with a significant other partner is an awesome way to pass the time when you’re sober. Ensure that you won’t get a surprise visit from a friend or roommate, and you can rock and roll; getting busted can be more embarrassing than owning a copy of Just Friends on DVD.

- Play video games. When under the influence, you can thank your sharper focus and stimulated senses for a remarkable experience in front of a video game console. We recommend N64’s GoldenEye or Mario Kart, Xbox’s Halo series, or Madden football for any system.
