Only frat boys rush in
This week, Western students walking by Concrete Beach will be introduced to campus fraternities. Known as ‘Rush Week’, the formal recruitment drive runs from Sept. 10 to Sept. 14.

The purpose of Rush Week is for students to “look at what it’s like to be in a fraternity and see many aspects of fraternities,” Duncan Attlesey, President of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) said.

“Fraternities emphasize academics, integration with community, strong volunteer experiences, and committment to values,” he added.

Western’s fraternities are eager to note their positive role on campus and in the community.

“All IFC member fraternities are required to perform charity work every year,” Attlesey said. One such charity endeavour involved members of Sigma Chi who spent the past summer volunteering in New Orleans.

Working with Habitat for Humanity, the 13 members helped rebuild the homes of Hurricane Katrina victims.

“We felt a social responsibility to help the people in New Orleans,” Sigma Chi President Stephen Lecce said. “Giving to others is an important part of the brotherhood.”
