Pumpkin, pumpkin the dangerous fruit
Another innocent pumpkin has been served up as a sacrifice for world improvement.

As part of the third annual Operation Pumpkin Drop, hosted yesterday by Western’s Engineers Without Borders (EWB), a 750 lb pumpkin was dropped by a crane from almost 200 feet above University College Hill to raise money and awareness for world poverty.

This year’s theme was ‘Untie Aid in Africa,’ a project aimed at amending international aid laws and inspiring greater growth in impoverished countries.

Currently, some wealthy nations help poorer countries by sending them tied aid that must be spent in the donor country. The EWB hopes to detach this responsibility and cut any requisite ‘ties’ preventing impoverished countries from using the money as they wish.

This year was another success. Although Siying Li, director of the Pumpkin Drop, estimated the event raised slightly less than the $1,900 taken in last year, hundreds of students huddled under umbrellas to cheer the rise of the celebrity fruit. And they dove for cover as it exploded.
