USC Elections: Ryan Gauss

On the presidential campaign trail

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

One thing is sure " Ryan Gauss wants to be the next University Students’ Council president. His eagerness was evident throughout the afternoon I spent shadowing his campaign.

The location, Somerville House, was less than ideal according to Gauss. It was a tricky sell " just before the lunch hour, when many are either getting their caffeine fix or rushing to class.

One event encapsulated the Gauss campaign. It happened just after classes ended and the hallway began to fill up. The campaign team stood by with literature ready and Gauss, sign in hand, waved and said hello to as many people as possible.

A young man came up and asked Gauss about his views on Canadian Blood Services. Immediately, he stopped what he was doing and gave his full attention to the conversation. Even as the crowds in the hall started to trickle down, he acted as if he had all the time in the world to talk.

Perhaps that’s the best thing to take away from the campaign: by using a small campaign team, Gauss emphasizes talking to students individually.

“It’s better to not overwhelm people and be more intimate when talking to students,” he said. “I want to let them know who I really am.”

Somerville may have been lethargic, but the day had some bonuses. A move to North Campus Building worked out, as the campaign team was able to hand out “Vote Gauss” water bottles to hundreds of students after a busy class emptied out.

While many students breeze by the campaign table, if you want to really know what Gauss is all about, stop him and ask some questions.
