Schulich to receive honourary degree at medicine convocation
Western will be presenting an honourary degree to Seymour Schulich, the landmark donor to the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry.

A successful Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist, Schulich is currently the Chairman of Newmont Capital Limited and director of Newmont Mining Corporation, which is the world’s largest gold producer.

Western President and Vice-Chancellor Paul Davenport commended Schulich on his support of higher learning: “He has a profound commitment to students, to accessibility and to giving people a full chance to participate in our knowledge-based economy.”

Schulich’s philanthropic activity includes donations of over $100 million to postsecondary institutions, including York University’s School of Business, the University of Calgary’s School of Engineering, McGill University’s Faculty of Music, and in 2004, a $26-million donation to Western’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

In 1999, Schulich became a Member of the Order of Canada. Since then, he has been presented with a Doctor of Laws in 2003 from York University and, in 2005, an honourary doctorate degree from McGill University.

Schulich will receive his honorary degree on May 16 at Western’s medical convocation, the first honorary degree to be presented at a medical convocation.
