Western professor vying for Ontario’s best lecturer
Western may be home to the best university lecturer in Ontario.

Western sociology professor Anton Allahar was announced as one of 10 finalists in TVO’s 2009 Big Ideas Best Lecturer competition on Monday. He was chosen by a panel of independent judges from a shortlist of 20 Ontario university and college professors based on the viewing of his video-recorded lecture.

The annual competition held by TVO’s popular lecture series, Big Ideas, recognizes the best lecturer in terms of his or her confidence and authority, clarity and coherence, and energy and enthusiasm. The contenders were nominated by their students and the winner will receive a $10,000 TD Insurance Meloche Monnex scholarship for their school.

“In a life so busy with deadlines, students get caught up with all sorts of stuff, so to take time out to acknowledge their professor is very gratifying,” Allahar said. “It serves as a reality check, suggesting that some of them are listening and some also ‘get it’ " it is so meaningful.”

In the final round of competition, the show will broadcast Allahar’s lecture on global economic development entitled “Why is the whole world not developed?” It will air on March 1 at 4 and 5 p.m., after which viewers may vote by mobile device or phone and online until 3 p.m. the next day or during the voting period from March 31 to April 5.
