Weese taking leave, Acting Dean of Health Sciences named
Kevin Wamsley, professor and associate dean of programs in the Faculty of Health Sciences, was announced as the faculty’s Acting Dean on Tuesday. He will take over the duties of newly re-appointed Dean Jim Weese until Weese returns from study leave in June 2010.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Wamsley said. “It’s a great faculty and it’s a good chance to get an even better sense of its inner workings and administration.”

Wamsley, a graduate of Western, obtained his PhD in physical education from the University of Alberta, teaching there and at the University of Calgary before returning to Western 12 years ago.

He specializes in Canadian sport history and the Olympic Games and served as director of Western’s International Centre for Olympic Studies from 1999 to 2006.

“Coming back to Western was a good opportunity for me to move more into my area of expertise,” Wamsley said.

The Faculty of Health Sciences has been growing steadily since its inception in 1997.

Currently, it encompasses five schools including kinesiology, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy and communication sciences and disorders. It also works with Campus Recreation, many research laboratories and several community clinics.

“The faculty has undergone many exciting changes recently,” Wamsley added.

“The opening of the new [Western Sport and Recreation Centre], expansion of the graduate program and increase in research productivity have all been positive results of our strategic plan.”

While sure to be busy with new duties, Wamsley will remain actively involved in research during his yearlong term. He will continue working with his graduate students to complete their research projects next year.
