Re: The Heavy Petters â€" Smell the Glove CD review
Jan. 19, 2007

To the Editor:
Sarah Berman’s review of The Heavy Petters’ album Smell the Glove, while fairly well-written, is lacking in two areas.

The first is a complete lack of recognition of the album’s (entirely direct and, I’m quite sure, deliberate) reference to the classic film This Is Spinal Tap. I would expect someone on The Gazette’s illustrious staff (keep at it everyone) would’ve at least seen the film and recognized the fact The Heavy Petters have named their debut album after Spinal Tap’s album in the film. So if you didn’t know before, you do now. Congratulations, your life is changed forever.

Second and more importantly, drum and bass (DnB) has been around for at least 15 years. It’s most definitely not a new genre in any sense, unless you’re comparing it to, say, opera.

I haven’t listened to the album, but despite the two-and-a-half star rating, I’m a die-hard drum and bass fan, and shall definitely check it out.
