Ugly new houses invade Old North area

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

To the Editor:
Students coming to live in London don’t appreciate the influence they have in defining the character of the city and the neighbourhoods they live in. Those living in “Old North” must appreciate this community’s beauty.

Over the last few years, this and other neighbourhoods like it have undergone redevelopment to accommodate student housing. Many of these redevelopments have shown respect both for students and for the neighbourhood and its aesthetic and social values.

Some have not. One of these is the KAP Holdings’ new development at 186 and 188 Huron St. This KAP Holdings project goes beyond bad design and development. It’s a disgrace to the neighbourhood!

Students should use their considerable economic clout by boycotting landlords who show such disrespect for the community around them. This is especially true now, when the many “for rent” signs suggest a surplus of student housing. Students can be choosy, and by being so they influence better neighbourhood redevelopments.
