Re: “Is the minimum-wage increase a good idea?”

To the Editor:
I enjoyed your debate about minimum wage and want to add a few points.

I think Ontarians should applaud Dalton McGuinty. When the Liberals took office, Ontario’s minimum wage was below national average, but now it’s the highest in the country along with B.C.

Yet people still complain, demanding the government increase minimum wage to $10.25 all at once! Why didn’t anyone complain when Mike Harris and Ernie Eves never even considered the issue?!

Another portion of Ontario’s wage policy that should be debated: Ontario is the only province with a separate " and lower " minimum wage for students under 18 years old.

I don’t think many people are aware of this. My father didn’t realize I had earned less than adult minimum wage while working at Tim Hortons! Ontario’s student minimum wage is discriminatory, and we should try to convince Mr. McGuinty of this.

Although we should applaud Mr. McGuinty, we’ll probably discover increasing minimum wage won’t affect the growing gap between rich and poor. The only ones to benefit will be large businesses, which will dump increased labour costs on the consumer and probably increase prices more than necessary!
