Be careful before you joke about rape

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

To the editor:
The other day just before a midterm, I overheard a group of students in the hall speaking about midterms they’d already done. I guess one of the students thought he was cool when he decided to say something along the lines of: “I totally raped that exam.”

I’d just like to point out to everyone that about one in two people have experienced unwanted sexual attention, and about one in 10 have been victims of sexual assault " one of them being my good friend. To put it bluntly, she was brutally raped repeatedly by four men. She became pregnant and had a miscarriage due to emotional and physical health issues.

That being said, I urge the students on campus to please have care in what you choose to say, because there is no telling who is listening. Is it really necessary to say something so grotesque? Is it not cool to say you aced it?

When people are inconsiderate and say such things, there can be an unwanted recollection of events.

In Kindergarten, we learned if ‘you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.’ So again, please don’t be a reminder of these cruelties " because one of those 10 victims might be standing right beside you.
