Admin should not invest in Darfur

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

To the Editor:
I was very happy to see Students Taking Action Now: Darfur’s silent protest covered in the Gazette. I am a STAND member, and it pained me to discover my tuition has indirectly funded the atrocities occurring in Darfur.

I think as privileged as we are here at Western, we have the responsibility to help those in need, and I believe each and every one of us has the compassion to make a difference.

This is our chance and we should push for targeted divestment for Darfur. It’s a simple step, and it’s about time we pay attention to what’s going on around us.

This is a serious issue, and we can’t afford to look away. As the silent protest insisted, administration needs to take a stand and agree to targeted divestment.

I have confidence administration will make the right decision now that it has the proper information in its hands.
