Re: “Let Athletes Use WSRC”
March 20, 2009

To the editor:
I would like to correct two important factual errors in this Gazette editorial. In it you said, “administration should have contributed to the cost of building the WRSC.” Indeed, the administration at Western pledged an initial commitment of $10 million " even prior to the student referendum in 2006. To date, Western has actually contributed $11.7 million to the new recreation centre.

You also said, “It is a disgrace that our varsity athletes, such as members of the squash and swim teams, cannot use the new squash courts or 50-metre pool” and, “it seems illogical that varsity athletes have no access at all.” In fact, these individual student athletes (who we look to with pride) have the same access to the facilities as all Western students. Before allowing booking of a full facility for team training or a meet, however, we are first tracking usage to ensure that all students who are contributing a great deal to this facility will not lose their access during important time periods. This is part of our contract with the University Students’ Council, signed prior to the referendum.
