Led by transfer student Leila Angrand, the Western’s men’s and women’s cross-country teams recently swept the McGill Open. The win was the ninth team championship for the women’s side and the fifth for the men in Western’s 16 years of attending the tournament.

Angrand finished first in the 4-km run with a time of 14:48, followed by teammate Lynn Mockler who finished second with a time of 15:43.

On the men’s side, Ryan Armstrong was Western’s top finisher in the 6- km race with a time of 20:24, putting him in third place.

The cross-country squad not only faced competitors from Canada, but runners from across the border as well. In attendance were the defending champions from Massachusetts’ Williams College, who came seventh at last year’s NCAA Division III nationals.

The team from Williams College was out-matched at every scoring position by Western.

Another standout at the meet was women’s team captain Jenn Webber, who was injured last year, but matched her 2005 best-ever finish at the McGill Open by placing 11th this year.

Next up, Western hosts the 32nd Annual Western International at Thames Valley Golf Course in London on Saturday, Sept. 23.
