Special Olympics registration table

For the first time at Western, the Interfraternity Council and National Panhellenic Council will be hosting a series of athletic events to raise funds for the Special Olympics.

The event, entitled Pentathlon 2007, will feature a series of five events from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, including a relay race at Elgin Hall, tug of war at Delware Hall, long jump at Elgin Courts and sponge toss and discus throw both at University College Hill.

Teams of six members each can register for $15 per participant, and all individuals who register will also receive tax receipts.

Duncan Attlesey, co-creator and event coordinator of the event, said the money from the tickets will be used for the Special Olympics and will include other amenities for participants.

“Food will be included in the registration costs and each participant will receive a T-shirt. We’ll also have a live deejay.”

The organizers of the event hope to get 40 to 50 teams and raise $2,000 for Special Olympics and are hoping similar events will take place at Western in the future.

“It’s nice to give back to the community, especially since [London is] hosting the 2010 Special Olympics,” said Julie Rochefort, another coordinator and creator of the event.

A registration table is set up in front of the UCC on Concrete Beach for teams to sign up until 4 p.m. today.
