Mustangs win first Yates Cup since 1998

While bouncing back from an 0-4 start to win the provincial championship is a great accomplishment, Mustangs football has a daunting task facing them next week in the form of the Manitoba Bison at the Mitchell Bowl in Winnipeg.

The Bison are ranked third in Canada and are coming off a 48-5 thrashing of the sixth-ranked University of Regina in the Hardy Cup.

The Mustangs, this year’s Yates Cup champions, are ranked 10th in Canadian Interuniversity Sport. But, Greg Marshall’s boys have been fighting adversity all season and there is no doubt they will put up a fight against the Canada West champion Bison.

Here are some players Western must key in on next week:

QB John Makie: 6”2, 215 (Regina, SK)
Team captain, second in Canada West in passing

RB Matt Henry: 5”11, 215 (Mississauga, ON)
Former Ontario Varsity Football League standout

WR Randolph Simmons: 6”4, 220 (Saginaw, MI)
Strong possession receiver

DL Justin Cooper: 6”1, 250 (Red Deer, AB)
2006 & 2007 Canada West All-Star, 2007 Canada West Outstanding Lineman of the Year
