Basketball, hockey on campus Saturday

Coming off last week’s win over the Brock Badgers, the men’s basketball team (4-5) will face the Waterloo Warriors (4-6) this Saturday at Alumni Hall.

Be sure to watch the trio of Matthew Curtis, Brad Smith and Colin LaForme. In the squad’s victory over Brock, Curtis led the Mustangs with a game-high 23 points and Smith notched another 21 points. In his home debut as a Mustang, LaForme recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 boards. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.

The women’s ballers (9-2) follow the men’s team on Saturday, looking to beat the visiting Warriors (6-5). The women’s squad currently occupies second place in the Ontario University Athletics West division, just four points behind the McMaster Marauders. The women’s game begins at 4 p.m.

Also, the women’s hockey team (6-8-4) is playing at 4 p.m. The squad faces the visiting York Lions (7-8-3) at Thompson Arena. Presently, Western trails the Lions by one point in the OUA standings.

Prior to the break, the women’s team strung together two consecutive victories, defeating the Queen’s Golden Gaels 4-1 and the UOIT Ridgebacks 7-3. Rookie forward Holly Ouellette had a hat trick in the win over the Ridgebacks. The team needs to continue its winning ways in order to remain in the postseason hunt.

On Saturday night, the men’s hockey team (12-2-0) will take to the ice to battle the Toronto Varsity Blues (9-8-0). Western currently sits atop the OUA Far West division with 27 points; the Varsity Blues hold second place in the Mid East division with 19 points. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

On Sunday afternoon, the women’s hockey team is back in action, facing the Varsity Blues (13-3-0) in a 4 p.m. game at Thompson Arena.
