With school flying by in top gear, many Western athletes were back in the thick and thin of their respective seasons last week.

The men’s and women’s track teams took part in the 25th annual Don Wright Track Challenge at Thompson Recreation and Athletic Centre last Friday.

Jen Cotten had another marvelous performance, winning double gold medals in the long jump and in the 600m sprint. Cotten set a combined meet, school and arena record in the long jump, leaping 5.98m. Teammates Heather Patterson and Andrew Judge also had double gold performances.

Patterson set a meet record in the weight throw tossing competition, throwing for 15.51m to earn gold. She also placed first in the shot-put throwing competition. The women won the team title with 175 overall points.

In a difficult weekend, Western’s Jennifer Nguyen was the only member of the Mustangs wrestling team to medal in the Guelph Open Wrestling Tournament last Saturday, finishing third in the 51-kg division. On the men’s side, no Western wrestler earned a podium finish.

Former Mustangs wrestler and Western alum Terri McNutt placed third in the women’s 55kg division.

The men’s and women’s curling teams came away with unblemished records at the West Sectional this past weekend, finishing 3-0. Both teams defeated the Windsor Lancers, Brock Badgers and Waterloo Warriors en route to their perfect records.

Skip Codey Maus led the men in their three victories, while Jennifer Scott paced the women in their successful showing.

On Friday, the men’s volleyball team swept the York Lions 3-0 on the home court.

The contest was a close one, as the team won sets 25-22, 25-19 and 25-20.

The duo of outside hitter Eric Simon and right side Josh Chisholm shut down the Lions with 13 kills and 10 kills respectively.

On Saturday, Simon and Chisholm continued to dominate on the court and their 12 kills and 10 kills respectively led the squad to another sweep against the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The two weekend wins bring the men’s record to 9-5 so far this season.

The women began the weekend equally as successful, but fell on Saturday in a game against the Blues.

Against York on Friday, the women volleyballers won 3-1, with scores of 27-25, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-15.

Right side Sara Farrell contributed 12 kills on the front line, while middle Lauren Willoughby had 11 to her name.

Saturday was not as positive for the women who lost the battle to Toronto 2-3. The team’s season record sits at 10-5 going into its next game.

The men’s hoops team took a road trip to visit the Guelph Gryphons this past weekend and brought home a close 71-66 win.

Forward Brad Smith led the team with 20 points in the match, while guard Matt Curtis contributed a noteworthy 13 points.

The women’s team also competed in Guelph and made Western proud.

Guard Amanda Anderson’s 19-point game, and forward Nadine Paron’s 15 points led to a 71-66 victory against the Gryphons.
