Re: “Presidential quiz”
Feb. 14, 2008

To the Editor:
I just finished reading the USC presidential quiz and was completely shocked three of the four candidates did not know our beloved giant purple mascot is called J.W.

However, I really should not be surprised by this, as I was hangin’ with J-Dub the other day on campus promoting our Western men’s hockey game at the John Labatt Centre last Saturday and nobody knew what the hell was going on.

Here is a conversation I had with someone.

Girl: Why is there a purple horse in a weird outfit?

Me: It’s hockey gear.

Girl: Oh ... why?

Me: Really? Giant purple mustang ... he’s our mascot.

Girl: Oh. What is its name?

Me: (confused) J.W. ... wow this is pathetic.

It seems that over 75 per cent of you are not able to associate purple Mustang + Western = mascot. Tip: get a fucking clue.

Here is some information that I easily pulled from the Western Mustangs website (www.westernmustangs.ca):

“Born in 1984, J.W. was named after Col. J.W. Little, a former Mayor of London and an original member of The University of Western Ontario’s Board of Governors.”

So Western, next time J.W. wants to hand you a flyer or maybe some delicious candy, don’t be a prick and turn away. Just say “Hey J.W.” and recognize him for what he represents: Western Mustangs athletics. Word.
