Re: “Trade deadline deals don’t lead to Cup contention.”
March 4, 2008

To the editor:
A few friendly reminders to Malcolm Aboud:

Do not attack trade deadline deals and mourn the Habs not acquiring Marian Hossa in the same column. The column doesn’t have any supporting evidence that deadline deals are bad and reads more like you’re trying to rationalize why you shouldn’t tear down Bob Gainey’s number from the rafters.

“This is Toronto” " no, this is actually London we’re living in.

No one considers Toronto a ‘deadline loser,’ except maybe the friends you referenced, even though you admit they know nothing about hockey.

Cristobal Huet is an unrestricted free agent next year. Outside of the Ottawa Senators, there isn’t a team in the NHL vying for the Cup that would sacrifice any sort of future for this guy since they can sign him as of July 1.

You really need to take off the Tricolore-tinted glasses if you think Tampa Bay would touch this guy with a 10-foot pole. Tampa is in the middle of a hunt for Steven Stamkos. Why would they want anything to do with a goalie who is a UFA at the end of the year? Including Huet in a package would soften it " for Tampa.

Good luck to your Habs in the playoffs. If you need to write anymore NHL articles, I’d be happy to review them before they go to print with glaring homer-ism and contradictions.
