“IF I GO DOWN, YOU’RE COMING WITH ME...” Both the men’s basketball and hockey teams were busy competing over the break. The basketball team went to the U.S. for exhibition play, while in a rematch of last year’s OUA West semifinal, the Mustangs hockey team took down their rivals from Brock 3-1, on Jan. 3.

A number of Mustang teams competed over the holiday season, racking up some impressive results.

The men’s hockey team finished 2008 on a high note with two big victories, including a 6-1 defeat of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Ridgebacks. In an exhibition game on Dec. 30, the ’Stangs dominated the Guelph Gryphons by the same 6-1 spread.

Western continued its hot streak into 2009 with a victory on Saturday Jan. 3, defeating the Brock Badgers 3-1. Western’s freshmen came out flying as centre Kevin Baker picked up a pair of goals and winger Joseph McCann notched the game-winner. Left-winger Aaron Snow tallied two assists.

The ’Stangs tallied their sixth consecutive victory with Sunday’s 3-2 overtime defeat over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, who currently sit first in the Ontario University Athletics Mid East division. The Mustangs had powerplay goals from winger Jeff Martens and defenceman Chris Petrow, while defenceman Jason Swit earned the overtime winner.

On the courts, the women’s volleyball team fared exceptionally well at the Innisbrook Invitational Tournament in Clearwater, Florida. In a New Year’s Eve game, the Mustangs came back from a two-set deficit to take the University of Calgary Dinos in five sets, earning the bronze medal in the consolation final.

In men’s volleyball, the Mustangs defeated the Windsor Lancers in five sets at the annual Excalibur Classic men’s volleyball exhibition tournament. The victory earned the Mustangs third place hardware in the tournament.

A road trip to the United States proved exciting for the men’s basketball team, as the ’Stangs split a pair of games with the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers. On Dec. 30, the Mustangs were narrowly defeated by the Tigers 67-65. The following morning, the Mustangs avenged the loss by dominating Rochester 61-41.

On Dec. 4, at the Brampton Powerade Center, the Western Mustangs cheerleading team reclaimed the national university title for the 23rd time in 24 years. The victory was extra sweet as the Mustangs redeemed last year’s disappointing loss to the Queen’s Gaels.
