Ski club offers trips and more

What: The UWO Ski Club is a non-competitive social club for students interested in skiing and snow-blading and even snowboarders of all skill levels. Students enrolled at Western, Brescia College, King’s University College, and Huron College can join.

Events/Activities: The Ski Club kicks off non-ski social events in October to pass the time without snow. Depending on members’ interests, events can include bowling, movie nights, or hanging out downtown, among other things.

After the holidays, the club has local trips to Boler Mountain, Cobble Hills and Eastern Canada.

Other trips include:

- Blue Mountain in Collingwood, Ontario, which is being re-booked as a day trip due to last December’s abnormally warm temperatures

- Whiteface in Lake Placid, New York for three days of skiing and three nights accommodation at the east’s tallest ski mountain.

- Mont Tremblant in Mont Tremblant, Quebec for Spring Break (Feb. 25-Mar. 2), including four days of skiing and five nights accommodation in the heart of the pedestrian village.

The trips give members quality skiing at a decent price and let them make friends with fellow students while skiing and partying.

Perks: The Ski Club has numerous sponsors, granting members discounts on ski equipment, clothing, accessories, and service at local retailers and on lift tickets at Boler Mountain. Members can also travel to The Toronto Ski, Snowboard and Travel show for free.

Skill level: As long as skiers can comfortably ride a blue/intermediate run at a decent hill, they can enjoy the club’s trips. The club advises beginners or unskilled skiers to pursue lessons at Boler before participating in the trips to fully enjoy them.

How to join: Students can join the club year round by visiting the Membership Services desk at Campus Recreation on the lower level of the University Community Centre. Make sure you bring your student card. Membership is $10 and covers the cost of additional trips. Members also must meet with an executive member to receive their membership and discount cards.
