Chirping irks Senator fan

Leafs captain shouting Senator Goalie

IF HE CAN’T HANDLE THE PRESSURE NOW, THE PLAYOFFS ARE GONNA BE ROUGH. Western student Evan Pacey wishes Leafs fans on campus would stop chirping him and his beloved Senators.

To the Editor:
With the NHL playoffs around the corner, it’s a good time to bring up an issue that’s affected me since I arrived at Western: the anti-“anything not Leafs” sentiment on campus.

Every Sens fan knows what I’m talking about and I’m pretty sure most Habs fans know too. When I came here from Ottawa, I knew what I was getting into. I knew I was going into the heart of Leafs Nation and would be a minority, but this is ridiculous. The amount of chirps and insolence I’ve experienced so far is way beyond anything I could have imagined.

I’ve got nothing against the Leafs or their fans; many of my best friends at Western are Leafs fans. But I do have something against campus’ ignorant Leafs fans.

You know who I’m talking about " the random people who walk up to you when you’re wearing a Sens or Habs hat and tell you how much they blow, or when they see you in line in the caf, they’ll make some loud, obnoxious comment about how the Leafs beat the Sens last Saturday.

These are the people that bring up how the Leafs beat the Sens three years in a row and how the Leafs have won the Cup and the Sens haven’t. Thanks for the info. I watched or was at all those games and remember them pretty clearly. What I don’t remember is the last time the Leafs won the Cup.

Was it 1967? That’s quite a long time ago " long before my lifetime, and even before the lifetime of some students’ parents " not much of an accomplishment in anyone’s books.

You’re probably saying to yourself, “Well, the Sens have never won a Cup.” True, but the Sens have only existed for about a third of the Leafs’ Cup drought and, in that time, have been a better Cup contender than the Leafs have over the past 40 years.

I could fill this page with more rebuttals to why the Leafs are the greatest team to ever step foot on the ice, but I won’t. I just want to get the point across to all those ignorant Leafs fans out there. Whenever you see someone wearing a Sens or Habs hat, it isn’t an open invitation for you to start chirping. Just say nothing. As Tie Domi once said, “Don’t talk crap if you can’t back it up”.
