September 29, 2009 Dear USC Council: We wish to thank you for providing us with an opportunity to participate in the 2009 USC Governance Review process. To help you better understand the perspective and dynamic that we bring to this review process, some information about each Committee member is below: Grant Stirling, PhD. Grant is the Associate Vice-President (Development) at Western; he holds two degrees from Western--BA 90 (English) and MA 92 Theory & Criticism; his PhD 98 is from York University. Grant has diverse Board experience including United Way of London and Middlesex, London Community Hebrew Day School, and The Richard J. Schmeelk Canada Foundation. He looks forward to bringing his Board experience and perspective as a Western alumnus to support the mandate of the committee as defined by the USC. David Brebner. David currently works for PricewaterhouseCoopers as a manager in the Audit and Assurance Group. David graduated with his HBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western in 2002 and obtained his Chartered Accountant designation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario in 2005. David has vast board experience currently holding positions on both the Executive Committee and Operating Board of Directors of the Grand Theatre, is a Director of the Canadian Advisory Committee to Neuchatel Junior College, and is the Director of Finance for the Anna Francis Arts Initiative (programming the "London Ontario Live Arts (LOLA) Festival"). David was the VP Finance of the USC in 2000-2001 and held numerous positions throughout his University career including being on the Senate (2000-2002), a trustee of Campus Trust (2000-2002), and the secretary and treasurer of Campus Advantage (2000-2001). Peter A. Ferguson, PhD. Peter is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Western. He received his BA from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and his PhD from UBC. His area of expertise is the functionality of democratic governance. He studies best (and worst) practices of governmental structures in emerging democracies as well as those of federal, provincial/state, and municipal governments in Canada and the United States. Last year, Peter received the USC Award of Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance Award of Excellence for Outstanding Achievement in Undergraduate Teaching and an American Political Science Association/Pi Sigma Alpha Teaching Excellence Award. Catherine Mulvihill. Catherine currently works in the Centre for New Students as the Student Engagement Programs Coordinator. While studying at Western, she spent two years as a voting member on the USC as Science President (2003-2004) and Science Councilor (2004-2005) and one year in a non-voting position as the Terry Fox Commissioner (2004-2005). Since graduating, she has continued her involvement as an active member of the USC Alumni Chapter. Kendell Wilde. Kendell is the USC’s General Counsel, and advises the organization on governance systems to put in place to ensure the smooth functioning of the organization. She is overseeing and facilitating the governance review process. She has committed to providing the remaining committee members with the information and resources necessary to permit them to make sound recommendations to the organization. We are committed to engagement throughout our review. We look forward to meeting with you and hearing your input during your in-person consultation session at 9:00 to 10:30 am on December 1, 2009. The location and any other relevant information will be emailed to you prior to the meeting. We are also committed to transparency. Our Progress Reports will keep you and others within the organization informed as the review unfolds. During our presentation of our final report to you, we encourage you to ask questions to better understand the soundness and appropriateness of the resulting recommendations.
