So you're looking to join the Western Mustang Band? Fantastic! We'd love to have you! The Western Mustang Band consists of students from all faculties of the University of Western Ontario. We are a pep and marching band who make an appearance at nearly every major Western Mustangs home game. The band prepares and performs halftime shows both at and away from the University. We also travel around Southern Ontario during the Christmas season, marching in various Christmas parades.
The band is a great oppertunity to not only keep your musical skills sharp, but also to meet many other students who simply love music and to be a part of an amazing community that you can't help but love.

How do I join?
The Western Mustang Band has finished its orientation schedule for the year. If you're still looking to join, please contact us so we can schedule an orientation for you.
At these orientations we will take a look at your playing ability, drill potential, and your attitude about the band and what it entails.Put your dedication and spirit on display as we get to know you and what you want to get out of joining the Western Mustang Band. Orientation is open to anyone wishing to join and will take place in our practice room, Alumni Hall, Room M2. If you have any questions, please visit our contact page. |
Do I need to own my own instrument?
No! If you own your own instrument, you are more than welcome to use it. If not, the band owns a large collection of instruments and equipment. After paying your band fees, you will be issued an instrument, lyre, and music flip folder for the year which you can sign out to practice at home. Because we sometimes play in adverse weather conditions, you may want to consider using a WMB instrument so yours doesn't get damaged.
If at any time your instrument needs repairs, ask an exec member for a repair form where you can describe the problem(s). This is an advantage to using band instruments since you don't have to pay for the repairs.
Reeds can be purchased from the band for $3 each.

What if I don't play an instrument?
No problem! You can still be a part of our fantastic community as one of our colourguard; a dedicated group of members who lead the band in the parade bearing flags and signs. If you wish to join the colourguard, you are still required to attend one of the orientation times listed above, however you will not be required to take part in the playing evaluation. Instead, we will take the time to teach you some flag techniques so you can get a taste of what being a colour guard is all about.
What are rehearsals like?
We practice every week in the band room, and rehearse under a professional paid director. Rehearsals are every Monday and Thursday at 5:30-7:00pm in Alumni Hall Room M2. The band room is on the South side of Alumni Hall (the right side if you're facing it) and up one flight of stairs (just follow the signs!)
Attendance is essential for the following reasons:
- We need to learn the music and field shows as a functional group.
- To keep on top of what's going on; when performances are, rehearsal schedule changes, addition and deletion of songs and other important announcements.
- To learn to march.
- Must have good attendance to be eligible for the awards given at the end of the year.
- If there is ever a social event or performance where only a limited number of .members can attend, those with higher attendance will be given priority.
